[texts]Factorizable Upwind Schemes: the Triangular Unstructured Grid Formulation - Nielsen, Eric J.
The upwind factorizable schemes for the equations of fluid was introduced recently. They facilitate achieving the Textbook Multigrid Efficiency (TME) and are expected also to result in the solvers of unparalleled robustness. The approach itself is very general. Therefore, it may well become a general framework for the large-scale Computational Fluid Dynamics. In this paper we outline the triangular grid formulation of the factorizable schemes...

A mobile, rapidly deployable ground-based system to track and image targets of aeronautical interest has been developed. Targets include reentering reusable launch vehicles (RLVs) as well as atmospheric and transatmospheric vehicles. The optics were designed to image targets in the visible and infrared wavelengths. To minimize acquisition cost and development time, the system uses commercially available hardware and software where possible...

[texts]Ultraviolet Spectra of Two Magnetic White Dwarfs and Ultraviolet Spectra of Subluminous Objects Found in the Kiso Schmidt Survey - Wegner, Gary A
Low resolution International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectroscopic observations of two magnetic white dwarfs BPM25114 and K813-14 were obtained using both the SWP and LWP cameras. The first object has an observed magnetic field of 4 x 10(7) Gauss and the second has one of 3 x 10(7) Gauss. Both objects have overall spectral energy distributions appropriate for cool DA white dwarfs with T(eff) near 10,000 K and accordingly show strong lambda lambda 1400 and 1600 absorption in their spectra...

[texts]Issue of Women in Tourism: Development Debate - Equitable Tourism Options (EQUATIONS)
Very few attempts are made to examine the experience and role of women in tourism. The larger debate on tourism impacts on women is still limited to women being portrayed as sex objects or sex work. It is seen that âhostâ communities in Indian tourism destinations are not consulted when their resources are coveted for tourism development. This deprivation of land, water and access to public places exerts pressure on women in these communities the most...

[texts]Filter measurements of chemical composition during the airborne Antarctic ozone experiment - Grandrud, B. W.
During the Airborne Antarctic Ozone Experiment campaign, a filter sampler was flown to measure the bulk composition of aerosol and gas phases. The background sulfate aerosol was measured in regions inside and outside of the chemically perturbed region (CPR) of the polar vortex. The mass ratio of sulfate outside to inside was 2.8. This is indicative of a cleansing mechanism effecting the CPR or of a different air mass inside versus outside...

[texts]An Anomalous External Force on the MAP Spacecraft - Starin, Scott R.
A common theme in discussions of the Microwave Anisotropy Probe (MAP) is the attainment of mission goals for minimal cost. One area of cost savings was a reduction in the fuel budget required. To reach orbit around the L2 notation point of the Earth-Sun system, the MAP spacecraft was guided very close to the Moon, allowing a gravity-assisted trajectory out to L2. In order to property time the lunar swing-by, MAP followed a trajectory of three-and-a-half highly elliptical phasing loops...

[texts]Evaluation of quasi-square wave inverter as a power source for induction motors - Guynes, B. V.
The relative merits of quasi-square wave inverter-motor technology versus a sine wave inverter-motor system were investigated. The empirical results of several tests on various sizes of wye-wound induction motors are presented with mathematical analysis to support the conclusions of the study. It was concluded that, within the limitations presented, the quasi-square wave inverter-motor system is superior to the more complex sine wave system for most induction motor applications in space.

CHEMICAL EVOLUTION IN AN AIR-HYDROGEN MIXING LAYER WAS INVESTIGATED. THE CONFLUENCE OF TWO PARALLEL FLOWS OF AIR AND HYDROGEN WAS EXAMINED NUMERICALLY IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE CONDITIONS OF SELF-IGNITION IN THE MIXING LAYER. THE CALCULATIONS SHOWED THAT THE REACTION ZONE IS LIMITED TO THE STOICHIOMETRIC REGION. FOR THE TWO STREAMS AT THE SAME TEMPERATURE, THE IGNITION LENGTH CAN BE EVALUATED BY NEGLECTING THE EFFECTS OF LATERAL DIFFUSION.

[texts]Correlation of total, diffuse, and direct solar radiation - Buyco, E. H.
Present requirements for realistic solar energy system evaluations necessitate a comprehensive body of solar-radition data. The data should include both diffuse and direct solar radiation as well as their total on an hourly (or shorter) basis. In general, however, only the total solar radiation values were recorded. This report presents a correlation that relates the diffuse component of an hourly total solar radiation value to the total radiation ratio of the maximum value attainable...

[texts]Applications of digital correlation to the measurement of velocity by light scattering - Smart, Anthony E
Scattered light may be studied efficiently by correlation of individual photon detection times. Available photomultipliers and fast digital correlators make these techniques applicable to a variety of subjects. There are many areas where the measurement of velocity is the key to understanding some phenomenon or improving some machine. Measurements which do not modify the situation are highly desirable and optical scattering may often come into this category...

It was found that for the particular common aperture feedhorn tested, system noise temperature increases were much greater when the plastic horn cover material was old and weathered than when it was new...

THE FORMATION OF INSOLUBLE BARIUM CUPRATE DEPENDS ON THE CONCENTRATION OF HYDROXYL IONS AND BARIUM IONS. WITH SUFFICIENTLY HIGH CONCENTRATIONS OF THESE IONS, THE YIELD FOR CU(3) IS THE MAXIMUM. BASED ON THE FINDINGS IT IS HYPOTHESIZED THAT AN EXTREMELY UNSTABLE TRIVALENT COPPER OXIDE OR HYDROXIDE IS INITI...

[texts]Modelling Hard Gamma-Ray Emission from Supernova Remnants - Baring, Matthe
The observation by the CANGAROO experiment of TeV emission from SN 1006, in conjunction with several instances of non-thermal X-ray emission from supernova remnants, has led to inferences of super-TeV electrons in these extended sources. While this is sufficient to propel the theoretical community in their modelling of particle acceleration and associated radiation, the anticipated emergence in the next decade of a number of new experiments probing the TeV and sub-TeV bands provides further subs...

The use of remotely sensed images is not new to archaeology. Ever since balloons and airplanes first flew cameras over archaeological sites, researchers have taken advantage of the elevated observation platforms to understand sites better. When viewed from above, crop marks, soil anomalies and buried features revealed new information that was not readily visible from ground level. Since 1974 and initially under the leadership of Dr...
